Dance Student Research and Choreography

To support dance students’ research and choreography projects, the Dance Program needs your help! Every year students conduct projects with costs that fall outside of the parameters of our budget. These projects are robust examples of how to expand the scope of research possibilities at our university.

Past projects have included:

  • Force of Flows, a dance piece that demonstrates the effects of stream bank erosion as part of Layla El-Khoury’s thesis for her M.S. in biological engineering with a water resources minor.
  • Fun and Games, a dance piece choreographed by undergraduate English major Delaney Galvin, reflecting her theatrical interpretation of the play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? By Edward Albee.
  • A dance and meditation research project with associated workshops that explored the intersection between improvisation and meditation, by Helen Wu, a graduate student in education.

Funding raised through this campaign will not only allow students to complete their research; it will also give them opportunities to present their research within and beyond NC State. Currently the creators of Force of Flows and Fun and Games will attend the American College Dance Association Mid-Atlantic Conference in March 2022. This conference will allow the choreographers to receive feedback from professionals in the dance field, while allowing NC State to be represented at an important conference.

Budget Breakdown:

The goal amount of $5,000 will allow up to five dance students to fund their projects this year. For example, for choreographic-based research that will be presented at a conference, the funding will allow five choreographers to cover the costs of costumes (approximately $400 each), music rights (approximately $200 each), conference registration fees (approximately $200 each), lodging for one night (approximately $100 each) and a per diem (approximately $88.20 each).

Funds will be placed in the Dance Enhancement Fund. If the project does not meet its fundraising goal or exceeds the project need, or if the project cannot be completed, the project will be modified or the funds will be used for the overall enhancement of the Dance Program.

Gifts are received by the NC State University Foundation, Inc. and may be distributed to an affiliated foundation that manages the fund supported by the donor.
