The Paper International Experience is a ten day trip for juniors and seniors in Paper Science to have the opportunity to be exposed to the global pulp and paper industry. Students will have the chance to visit numerous pulp and paper mills, research facilities, and several universities with programs similar to our very own revered Paper Science and Engineering program. In addition, students will have the chance to become immersed in Finnish culture and build valuable professional development skills as well as see how the Finnish pulp and paper industry compares to the US pulp and paper industry. This immersive experience will be incredibly valuable to the juniors and seniors in Paper Science and Engineering.
Finland was chosen as our destination due to the country’s robust pulp and paper industry and unique culture. The country contains some of the world’s newest mills and newest papermaking technology. In addition, Finland has a state-of-the-art research program which has an impact on the US pulp and paper industry and how we manufacture our products. Their diverse manufacturing facilities and biorefineries are also destinations of interest since many of the sites are all located fairly close to each other and accessible by train.
Our desire is to maximize our trip. There are multiple classroom and professional goals for this experience.
This is a unique experience that not many engineering students will have the opportunity to pursue. For several students, this will be their first time leaving the US or traveling abroad. Since the pulp and paper industry is a global business, this opportunity will be an invaluable experience to grow professionally, become more well-rounded engineers, and become better global citizens.
