SATELLITE Camp

The Caldwell Fellows Program develops NC State’s exceptional undergraduate students in the philosophy and practice of servant-leadership. From this foundation of service emerged SATELLITE (Science and Technology Enriching Lifelong Leadership in Tomorrow’s Endeavors).

The goal of the SATELLITE program is two-fold; it educates participants about the possibilities that exist within the fields of science and technology and encourages them to pursue these possibilities further after the program concludes. It is focused on educating high school sophomores from underserved and rural high schools across North Carolina. For 26 years, we’ve hosted students on NC State’s campus for a five-day program where they are exposed to scientific and technological career paths while gaining:

- Opportunities to explore and engage with current issues and career paths in the sciences and technology-related disciplines through innovative lectures and hands-on laboratory experiences.

- Development activities in leadership, teamwork, diversity, and cultural awareness.

- Motivation for higher education through exposure to a university setting by way of on-campus housing, tours of university facilities, seminars with university staff and individual peer mentorship with current university students.

SATELLITE is funded completely by grants and donations. Students are asked to pay only $25 to attend the program even though the price per camper is approximately $500. The primary barrier that keeps SATELLITE from reaching more students is a lack of sustainable funding sources, which is why we are seeking your support for the upcoming camp. The amount of funding received is directly correlated to the number of students that can be accepted to the program. Costs for the program include housing, meals, transportation and activity-related supplies.

Budget Breakdown:

$5,000 will support 10 campers. $500 per camper includes:

- Camp T-shirt, water bottle and drawstring bag

- Housing for four nights

- Meals and snacks, including a welcome lunch for campers and their parents and a formal banquet to celebrate the end of camp

- Supplies for a variety of hands-on activities led by NC State faculty in support of STEM education

- Transportation and admission to off-campus activities

Funds will be placed in the SATELLITE Fund. If the project does not meet its fundraising goal, exceeds the project need, or the project cannot be completed, the funds will be used for the overall enhancement of the SATELLITE Fund.

Gifts are received by the NC State University Foundation, Inc. and may be distributed to an affiliated foundation that manages the fund supported by the donor.
